Home Care Instructions for Cosmetic Reconstruction Aftercare

Cosmetic Reconstruction Aftercare

After Cosmetic Reconstruction

Adjusting to your new bite may take some time following a cosmetic reconstruction. As your bite changes or the position of your teeth is altered, it may take several days for your brain to recognize the new position of your teeth or their thickness as normal. If you continue to detect any high spots or problems with your bite, please call our office, so we can schedule an adjustment appointment with the dentist in Windsor, Ontario.

You may experience some sensitivity to hot and cold. This is normal, as the teeth require some time to heal after the removal of tooth structure. Your gums may also be sore for a few days. Warm salt water rinses (a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) three times a day will reduce pain and swelling. A mild pain medication (one tablet of Tylenol or Ibuprofen (Motrin) every 3–4 hours) should ease any residual discomfort.

At Windsor Dental Centre, we prioritize patient care to improve oral health. To enhance your recovery, maintain a soft diet for the first few days and avoid sticky or hard foods. Stay hydrated with water, as proper hydration supports healing. Our dedicated team ensures that each patient receives personalized attention and patient-focused care. Remember, your comfort during recovery is our top priority. We encourage patients to communicate openly about their experiences to enhance your care and address any concerns directly.

After Crown and Bridge Appointments

Crowns and dental bridges usually take two or three appointments to complete. In the first visit, the teeth are prepared, and moulds of the mouth are taken. Temporary dental crowns or bridges are placed to protect the teeth while the custom restoration is being made. Since the teeth will be anaesthetized, the tongue, lips, and roof of the mouth may be numb. Please refrain from eating and drinking hot beverages until the numbness is completely worn off.

Tooth Extraction Aftercare

The formation of a blood clot after tooth extraction stops the bleeding and starts the healing process. That’s why we ask you to bite on a gauze pad for 30–45 minutes after the appointment. If the bleeding or oozing persists, place another gauze pad and bite firmly for another 30 minutes. You may have to do this several times.

After Composite Fillings (white fillings)

When an anaesthetic has been used, your lips and tongue may be numb for several hours after the appointment. Avoid any chewing and hot beverages until the numbness has completely worn off. It is very easy to bite or burn your tongue or lip while you are numb.

After your appointment, you may experience some hot, cold, and pressure sensitivity. Injection sites may also be sore. Ibuprofen (Motrin), Tylenol or aspirin (one tablet every 3–4 hours as needed for pain) work well to alleviate the tenderness. If pressure sensitivity persists beyond a few days or if the sensitivity to hot or cold increases, contact our office.

You may chew with your composite fillings as soon as the anaesthetic completely wears off since they are fully set when you leave the office.

In case you feel that your bite is uneven, have persistent pain, or have any other questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us. At Windsor Dental Centre, we strive to provide optimal patient care to ensure your comfort and satisfaction with all treatments.
